MeArm is a compact desktop robotic arm that introduces pupils to the basic principles of robotic joints, servo motors, and remote control.

The robot uses four servo motors to control the base, shoulder, elbow, and gripper. By combining these movements, pupils can position the arm, reach for objects, and open or close the gripper.

The project is controlled by an ESP8266 microcontroller. The controller creates its own Wi-Fi network, allowing the robotic arm to be controlled directly from a computer, tablet, or phone without requiring an external router or internet connection.

Pupils use block-based programming to explore how servo motors are controlled using angles. They create simple commands for individual joints and experiment with combining several movements into coordinated actions.

A browser-based control interface allows pupils to move each joint using sliders, buttons, and keyboard controls. This provides an easy way to see how software commands are translated into physical robotic movement.

During the project, pupils assemble the mechanical arm, connect the servo motors and controller, test individual joints, and adjust movement limits to prevent the mechanism from reaching unsafe positions.

By completing the project, pupils gain practical experience with robotics, electronics, programming, Wi-Fi control, and the coordination of multiple moving joints.

That is take home project!

Learning outcomes

  • Understand how a robotic arm moves
Pupils learn how several rotating joints work together to position the arm and gripper.
  • Explore how servo motors control position
Pupils discover how servo motors move to specific angles and how these angles correspond to physical joint positions.
  • Build a complete robotic electronic system
Pupils connect four servo motors, an ESP8266 controller, power supply, and control signals.
  • Learn how robots can be controlled over Wi-Fi
Pupils use a local Wi-Fi network to communicate directly with the robotic arm from another device.
  • Program robotic movement using blocks
Pupils create commands that control individual joints and combine them into simple movement sequences.
  • Understand how software controls mechanical movement
Pupils see how values in a program translate directly into movement of the robot.
  • Explore movement limits and calibration
Pupils adjust servo positions and safe angle ranges to match the physical mechanism.
  • Develop engineering and problem-solving skills
Pupils test, troubleshoot, and improve the robotic arm through practical experimentation.

There are some requirements exist for the course:

1. You must be confident in using a computer, keyboard and mouse. At the good user level.

2. Know how we save files on a computer, what a file and folders are, etc.

3. Be able to switch between windows in the operating system. Use the keys’ shortcuts.

4. No previous experience with 3D modeling is required

5. No previous experience Robotics is required.
